The Race to Manufacture Ellume’s COVID-19 Rapid Diagnostic Tests

In an Australian manufacturing success story, Ellume is in the process of automating the high-volume production of its rapid COVID-19 home test using the latest technologies from Bosch and Rockwell Automation.  The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly spread to all parts of the globe. There have been more than 395 million cases [1] around the world and this figure continues to rise rapidly. Healthcare systems are overwhelmed and continue to face a multitude of challenges as they work to manage demand while providing high-quality care. Communities, governments and industry around the world are now recognising the importance of minimising the requirement for widespread lockdowns and travel restrictions, which have been the main line of defence against COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. As countries around the world move towards a new post-pandemic normal, rapid diagnostic testing has an integral role in reducing disease burden, managing outbreaks and community transmission, and reducing pressure on healthcare systems. Ellume, a Brisbane-based digital diagnostic company, has recently developed a rapid COVID-19 home test which detects the SARS-CoV-2 antigen and complies with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting requirements. Accurate results are provided within 15 minutes, providing users with quick results, and helping communities to return to a ‘new normal.’ With a growing list of orders, predominantly from the United States, ensuring supply was a key priority for Ellume. Scaling up production To meet the consumer demand for COVID-19 home tests, Ellume has invested in new manufacturing lines for their facilities in both Australia and the U.S. “COVID-19 isn’t going away anytime soon and as communities and economies continue to open up there will be increased need for rapid antigen tests which is why automating our production is vital to meet a surge in consumer demand,” said Sean Parsons, founder and CEO, Ellume. Ellume called on Bosch Australia Manufacturing Solutions (BAMS), a leading supplier of factory automation for the medical device industry, to automate the high-volume production of its COVID-19 diagnostic tests. This involves 27 new production lines in total – three new lines for Ellume’s facility in Brisbane, Australia and 24 production lines for their facility in Maryland, U.S. “We are providing Ellume with 18 fully automated assembly lines for manufacturing the home COVID-19 analyser unit. This also includes an end-of-line test system which communicates to the analyser unit over Bluetooth and completes a functional check to ensure the quality of the part,” said Bradley Trewin, Programme Manager, BAMS. “BAMS is also manufacturing nine lines for the production of the ‘dropper’ which will fully automate the assembly and packing of this product,” he added. Next generation technologies The Bosch manufacturing experience and factory automation know-how has benefited this project immensely. The production lines are being manufactured at Bosch’s headquarters in Clayton, Victoria. More than 160 robots are being utilised on this project, there are also 200-plus vision systems which are cameras that inspect and evaluate the line, and more than 60 programmable logic controllers (PLCs).  “We are delighted to bring the BAMS automation expertise to support Australian med-tech manufacturing for a global market – a real positive for local manufacturing, and a positive for the testing and medical diagnosis of COVID-19,” said Gavin Smith, President of Bosch Australia. The new Ellume manufacturing facility will be one of the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The production lines for Ellume’s Brisbane facility are undergoing final testing and likely to be operational by the end of February, whilst the first U.S. lines departed in November 2021.  The final lines for the US are expected to be installed and operational in mid-2022. No room for slip-ups on slip joints as infrastructure future shocks pose challenges for building professionals

As urban consolidation concentrates transport infrastructure into closer proximity with social infrastructure and housing, so architects, engineers and builders are seeking to protect builders and occupants long-term against the impact of vibration, cracking and structural weakening. “Not only are the sort-term impacts of drilling, earthmoving, tunnelling and building presenting ongoing challenges, but also issues such as urban microclimate hot spots and climate change are coming into play,” says Mr David Booty, Manager of bearing manufacturer Hercules Engineering (a division of Cut To Size Plastics). “This building protection issue goes well beyond reports of new buildings showing faults and cracking, which are alarming enough in themselves. But the potential problem is extending out 10, 20 and 30 years into the future, as buildings have to flexibly withstand more physical impacts from nearby heavy vehicle and machinery activity – and things like hot spots where high-rise and extensive concrete structures are clumped together in particular suburbs and locations. The challenges to build for the future are ongoing and intensifying,” said Mr Booty, whose company is in response fabricating no-maintenance slip joints that combine tough low-friction composite materials with durable metal facings to provide extended lifespan protection against cracking and structural disruption of civil, industrial and resources infrastructure and construction projects. The latest specially fabricated Herculon™ Composite Slip joints (HSCs) are engineered to last multiple decades, a durability already achieved in service by earlier such bearings in residential, commercial, industrial and resources applications. The HSCs complement existing proven stock and custom types, including Herculon™ structural slip joints, which protect against potentially damaging expansion, contraction, ambient vibration and changing loadings caused by factors such as passing road and rail traffic, production machinery and changing uses of buildings. the latest Some of the latest Herculon™ structural bearings are manufactured by integrating H-Glide fibre-reinforced composite pads sliding on 2B finish stainless steel (pictured right) to achieve an exceptionally low sliding coefficient of friction compared with other engineering bearing materials, even underwater. Unlike metal bearings that may rust or require continual lubrication and maintenance, the environmentally safe yet hard-wearing H-Glide bearing pads are dry sliding and will not release contaminants into surrounding environments or adjacent processes, says Mr Booty. HSC slip joints, meanwhile, are located between walls, corbels, beams and concrete floors to provide industrial and commercial engineers, architects and building specifiers with alternatives to more costly types of bearings, or those with shorter lifespans. The HSC’s Stainless-Steel Plate (2b Finish) and elastomeric pad slip joint structure typically outlasts standard grease-type slip joints multiple times, providing extended lifespan protection for major infrastructure, industrial and mining projects where no-maintenance durability is vital. The slip joints have been proven in service over lifespans of decades, says Mr Booty. The latest applications of custom engineered HSCs involve diverse projects, including a high-rise residential/commercial project in Sydney, a town centre mixed-use project in Melbourne, and an underground infrastructure project in which core filled block walls incorporated locating dowels to lock the slab in position and allow for expansion, rotation and shock absorption after the slab is cured, said Mr Booty. “The challenge involved in ensuring the ongoing slip joint protection required for the project was that cutting or drilling stock slip joints to fit around or between the dowels would have compromised their extremely long-life performance, which was one of their major advantages for the job.” “So, in this case, the solution was custom-engineering HSC slip joints to fit in continuous strips either side of the locating dowels so it could be used in extended lengths to provide optimum load-bearing capacity and reliability in a restricted space,” says Mr Booty. This configuration also obtained the greatest benefit from the ability of the extended slip joint to accommodate small variations in the surfaces of the slab and wall structure, with the 7mm thick slip joint acting to accommodate these variations and spread the load evenly to further contribute to greater reliability and lifespan. The custom design obviated the need to drill the Grease Slip joints or to painstakingly and precisely measure the distances between the dowels to use increments of HSC Slip joints. Using the full length of HSC slip joints on both sides of dowels saves significant amounts of installation time. Challenge and Solution “Apart from immediate efficiencies and savings, the longer-term benefit is of maximum relevance to architectural, engineering and construction audiences. In the face of an increasingly tighter regulatory environment, professional groups are looking further down the road to see how they can provide assurances of long-term performance to their customers, who are very much aware of the issues,” said Mr Booty. “Sometimes it is not so much that old methods of countering building movement or inflexibility were wrong in the context of the time they were used, but rather that the bar of durability and efficiency has been raised in the face of new challenges. Increasingly, we are being called upon to design for very long-term horizons,” says Mr Booty. Australasia joins $1.5 billion surge towards revolving doors to enhance energy sustainability and security

Australia and New Zealand are joining a worldwide trend that is expected to see sales of revolving doors globally expand to more than $A1.5 billion ($NZ 1.6 billion) by 2028, in response to climate change, energy efficiency and integrated security needs. “These doors are energy-efficient and help reduce the loss of heating or cooling of the buildings,” says the global Research and Markets organisation, which serves 30,000 companies worldwide. “Further, a rise in spending across APAC (Asia-Pacific) countries for maintaining security in office premises across the commercial, industrial, and government sectors is driving the adoption of advanced revolving doors,” it says in a report this month. Global e-grocery leader Rohlik triples picking productivity with new Swisslog automation solutions

Global e-grocery disruptor, Rohlik, has invested in Swisslog automated micro-fulfilment centre (MFC) solutions to boost pick productivity threefold, and deliver 60% more storage space. Rohlik has added two new projects, which are part of a $66m AUD (45m Euro) automation investment, as the company plans to deliver faster service more than 850,000 customers, with the flexibility to effectively manage demand peaks. The same automation technologies are providing benefits to e-grocery and retail customers in Australasia, after being proven in the U.S. for years. “Automating e-grocery fulfillment enables significant productivity improvements compared to picking products from store shelves, and it also eliminates in-store picker congestion,” says Mr Francis Meier, Managing Director, Swisslog Australia and New Zealand. “Automated micro-fulfillment centres help to reduce delivery costs and shorten the last mile and the time to consumer. They are also an ideal solution for fulfilling online orders for curbside pickup,” he said. Rohlik’s latest automation projects will deliver a threefold increase in picking productivity, over 60% more storage space in its fulfilment centres, and a streamlined replenishment and inventory process, says Swisslog. Shift in consumer behaviour The pandemic has brought a major shift in grocery shopping patterns, with research suggesting that up to two-thirds of consumers changed their grocery shopping behaviour. IoT Automation finds a capable partner in LAPP Australia as it develops world-leading mine emergency system

Tailored cable connection solutions from LAPP Australia are now being used in an innovative lighting system from the Australian company, IoT Automation in a product designed to set world benchmarks in mine safety and emergency communication The expert team from IoT Automation developed a software-controlled intelligent lighting system called Firefly Smart Lighting System, which also enables safe evacuations and emergency measures in underground mines. The Firefly Smart Lighting System is a robust, purposeful and intuitive system that improves visibility, workflow and, above all, safety in the mine It is networked with a central control server that coordinates the Firefly UPS control panels centrally underground. These Firefly UPS control fields control the lighting by supplying the Firefly LED lighting modules with battery-buffered power and communication. The Firefly UPS control panels can be operated as an independent lighting cell or can be connected to the central control server to form a site-wide intelligent lighting network. The multi-colour, addressable LED assembly from Firefly can provide red, green, yellow, blue or white tunnel lighting as required. It is also designed to provide emergency or evacuation lighting stages for underground workers. Lapp Australia General Manager, Mr Simon Pullinger, says IoT originally ordered the required cable harnesses (including LAPP ÖLFLEX® instrument cables) from a provider outside of Australia. However, due to the complex requirements, there were repeatedly problems with delivery, which meant that the company initially decided to assemble the cable harnesses itself and buy the required cables directly from LAPP Australia. “But LAPP can do much more than just produce and supply cables,” says Mr Pullinger. “When it comes to tailored connection solutions, we have strong capability as a system supplier and development partner. That is why Robin Paine, Managing Director & Co-founder of IoT Automation, called LAPP Australia and asked whether he could purchase the pre-assembled cable harnesses required directly from LAPP in Australia”. That was no problem for our LAPP team “Down Under”,” said Mr Pullinger. “We received drawings and target prices, followed by a forecast of usage. “In co-ordination with our LAPP colleagues in Singapore, we have also been able to guarantee the customer that all cables are available in our warehouse in Eastern Creek and that no time-consuming transport times are involved,” said Mr Pullinger. With the cable harnesses from LAPP, we can once again concentrate on our core competencies and ensure that our Firefly Smart lighting system is used even more effectively in the mining industry,” says Robin Paine. Each module of the system has a built-in 1.5Ah +3.7VDC lithium polymer battery (LiPo), which enables an operating time of three hours. If the connecting cable between the Firefly lamp and the US control panel is ever damaged or cut, this is an important safeguard for failures. As the battery level decreases, the intensity of the Firefly light is slowly reduced so that a longer runtime can be achieved. The 18 high-performance LEDs in the Firefly offer a wide beaming angle of 110-135 while simultaneously providing high power efficiency. This ensures maximum lighting and visibility for the workers. At a distance of 20 m between the Firefly modules, an illumination of over 70 Lux can be achieved in a 5 x 5 m mine tunnel. The Firefly modules are supplied with a voltage of 6-60 VDC and controlled via an RS485 communication bus, both of which are supplied by single four-core instrument cables INSTRUM RE-Y(ST)Y and INSRUM RE-Y(ST)YRY from the Firefly UPS control panel. This means that the high-intensity Firefly lights can be easily positioned at 20 m-long crossroads along the tunnel. Each Firefly light is equipped with a 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE 5.0) radio device to provide a redundant wireless communication path in the event of damage to the control cable. This function enables every Firefly unit to track and position a Wi-Fi or BLE tag with an accuracy of 20 m. In addition, the Firefly lights can be wirelessly connected to other Bluetooth devices, such as seismic and ground-supported instruments. Protection of nuclear power workers opens doors to Aussie innovators at electricity plants globally

Electricity generation uptime and safety gains at some of the world’s largest nuclear power plants are winning international recognition for the fast-actuation, quick-release CamNut® system from Australian precision engineering company, Technofast. The successful use of the system at the Hanul nuclear plant in South Korea – with an installed 6157MW capacity in two stages – has been complemented by their use also at the country’s Wolsong, Shin Wolsong and Hanbit nuclear plants and at major steam turbine plants as well. Days can mean millions of dollars in generation industries – and the CamNut and EziTite systems offer better risk management, by getting people in and out of machinery quicker which is a major plus in industries such as oil and gas, mining and energy, manufacturing and processing.” The savings at the original Korean nuclear and fossil electricity applications have been proven over more than a decade, with multiple new applications following their success. The CamNut system and its complementary products are used in major areas of the Korean Nuclear generators including: Combined Reheat Valve (CRV) (CamNut – 1.75in) Main Stop Valve (MSV) (CamNut 2.5in) Control Valve (CV) (CamNut 3in) High-pressure control valve and stop valve (CamNut) Venturi (EziTite Hydraulic Nut 3in) CamNuts are rapidly applied by being placed on bolt studs then hydraulically actuated, stretching the bolt to the precise tension required and then locking it in place mechanically with a locking device. The reverse procedure permits equally rapid disassembly when it is eventually required for annual or ad hoc maintenance, for example.
