Durable and economical Konecranes stand the test of time in challenging Vietnam steel mill environment

Phu My Flat Steel operations employing Konecranes

Phu My Flat Steel, located in the heavily-industrialised Ba Ria - Vung Tau province about 70 kilometres southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, made a decision to equip with Konecranes heavy duty cranes before the factory commenced operations in 2004 – and is still satisfied with that decision.

"After using the cranes for all the years since then, we can say that they're very good in operation and perform very well for us," said Nguyen Tan Hoanh, Technical Manager of Phu My Flat Steel, a subsidiary of Vietnam Steel Co.

The plant is equipped with a single 50 ton Konecranes overhead crane, eleven 30 ton Konecranes overhead cranes, a 25 ton overhead crane and numerous monorail systems, used for moving raw steel and processed product around the giant factory. The overhead cranes are mix of Spacemaker and CXT variants.

Phu My Flat Steel supplies Vietnam users with an annual 405,000 tons of annealed cold rolled coil, full hard cold rolled coil, and pickled and oiled coil.

Located in the Phu My I industrial zone, the company's production processes include:

  • Push-pull pickling line
  • Cold reversing mill
  • Batch annealing plant
  • Cold revesing mill and temper mill
  • Recoiling line
     

“Back in 2004, when making a decision to buy overhead cranes, we travelled to Singapore at the invitation of Konecranes. This followed a recommendation from a colleague in our industry that we consider their cranes,” Mr Nguyen recalled.

“The main reasons we actually decided to go ahead and purchase from Konecranes were their good prices as well as economical energy use. Seven years on, we find we’re still happy with that decision. The cranes are very good in operation.”

“When considering the performance of the cranes themselves, Konecranes is very good at everything they do. They do it very well and are better than their competitors,” Mr Nguyen said. The cranes are also simple and easy to maintain.”

Konecranes CXT cranes, with individual hoist capacities up to 80 tons, are designed to be industry benchmarks of safety and ergonomics, with easy and effective load handling and optimum dimensions for space saving solutions. CXT cranes are designed to eliminate unused or under-utilised square metres because they can operate closer to the walls and lift the load higher.

The Konecranes SM Spacemaker models are a heavy duty range of crane of up to 600 tons capacity that combine excellent operating height and hook approaches with compact, lightweight construction. These characteristics produce substantial savings on building costs – up to 30 per cent in many cases – and a maximum of work space.

Each lifting application in a steel mill presents its own challenges and unique environment. Beginning with bulk unloading, scrap yard cranes and charging cranes, the stakes increase with high-capacity ladle cranes transporting molten metal.

In the same area as ladle cranes are tundish cranes, which have to stand the same harsh environment where all maintenance cranes serve the continuous casting machine.

Heavy-duty slab cranes or billet cranes feed the rolling mill and are therefore critical to its operation. Coil, bar and plate handling cranes in the rolling area must also be able to handle high heat and new automated processes for accelerated water-cooling.

Just-in-time delivery requires shipping area cranes and lift trucks on the factory field to perform at high speeds with excellent reliability.
